Is GSP or Chad Ochocinco next for Anderson Silva?
The National Football League's collective bargaining agreement expires at 11:59 p.m. ET tonight, and unless there is a miracle at today's negotiations, the league is headed for a work stoppage. That opens the door for Chad Ochocinco, the Bengals' outlandish receiver and fan of MMA, to pursue a dream: fighting Anderson Silva.
He and UFC president Dana White discussed a match-up on Twitter, both pointing out that the expiration of the CBA isn't all bad.
Ochocinco has tried to challenge Silva in the past, and UFC president Dana White has played along, even offering Silva a spot on the 2010 New Year's weekend card. But the fights could never be anything more than a joke because of the NFL's contracts that keep players risking their health.
But without a CBA in place, Ochocinco is open to pursue MMA more seriously. Silva is slated to fight Georges St. Pierre if St. Pierre wins his April 30 bout with Jake Shields. In the meantime, the world needs a Silva/Ochocinco matchup of some kind. Perhaps they can stap on sumo suits, get in a baking competition, or play a game of tennis. "Ocho vs. The Spider" has reality show written all over it.

Aoki is back in the states while Irvin scurries off to Europe
Strikeforce is putting together a fascinating card in San Diego. The April 9th event was originally was supposed to feature part two of the heavyweight Grand Prix's first round. Because of licensing issues with Josh Barnett, those fights were moved to Dallas in June.
Scott Coker has thrown together an excellent card in its place. Nick Diaz will defend his 170 title against Paul Daley and Gilbert Melendez puts his 155 title on the line versus Tatsuya Kawajiri. The latest addition to the card is former top five lightweight Shinya Aoki. MMA-Japan.com had the original news.
The infamous Japanese submission artist will battle Lyle Beerbohm. It's an interesting booking with Beerbohm (16-1) having just suffered his first career loss at the hands of Pat Healy. That said, Aoki (26-5) is also coming off a devastating loss at the hands of Yuichiro Nagashima. That was the bizarre fight fought under varying rules at Dynamite!! 2010. The first round featured K-1 rules. Aoki drop kicked and flopped his way through those three minutes. In round two, the MMA portion of the fight, Aoki got drilled in the opening seconds by a knee and went night night (4:05 mark).
Aoki hits the ground in Southern California in less than four weeks, while James Irvin has to leave the state and country for that matter to get a fight. Irvin, who has multiple positive tests for banned substances, is expected to fight in Poland on Mar. 19.
If he goes through with the fight against Mamed Khalidov, it could effectively end his fighting career in the U.S. Irvin was dumped from this week's Shark Fights 14 card in Texas when it was revealed he tested positive again for a banned substance back in December after a win in Calfornia over Jorge Oliveira. He is suspended through this December. Irvin's checkered history with positive tests and injuries is unrivaled in MMA.

Strikeforce weigh-in: Henderson's uphill climb against much bigger Feijao
Dan Henderson's been here before looking across at a much bigger opponent, but it can't be getting easier at the age of 40. The legendary grappler has built a career on try to take down the huge dudes at light heavyweight and he's got another big test in front of him tomorrow night in Columbus, Oh. when he battles Strikeforce light heavyweight champ Rafael Feijao.
Feijao will probably step into the cage around 225 pounds. There was a time when he fought at heavyweight in the low 230-pound range. Henderson maxes out around 208 pounds.
“One of the benefits of fighting at 205 is I get to enjoy my food. One of the drawbacks is I have to fight guys [Feijao’s] size," Henderson said. "Obviously, I wouldn’t be here if winning a world title wasn’t one of my goals. But the challenge of fighting someone like Feijao is exciting. He’s big, he’s tough and he’s strong. I would definitely enjoy having the belt but the reason I fight is for the challenge."
The Feijao-Henderson fight is one of two scheduled five-rounders. Marloes Coenen will defend her Strikeforce title for the first time against Liz Carmouche.

Dan Henderson Beats Rafael Feijao Cavalcante, Wins Strikeforce Belt
Henderson, the former Pride champion of two different weight classes, has won the Strikeforce light heavyweight title, defeating Rafael "Feijao" Cavalcante Saturday night in Columbus, Ohio with a third-round technical knockout.
Henderson got off to a slow start but put on a tremendous finish, drilling Feijao with a hard right hand to knock him down, then finishing him with about half a dozen more punches on the ground before referee Dan Miragliotta stopped the fight, awarding Henderson the TKO win.

Video analysis: Hendo wins another title, what's next?
Many were ready to toss Dan Henderson on the scrap heap following his upset loss at the hands of Jake Shields. Back at light heavyweight, Hendo has responded nicely with huge knockout wins over Renato "Babalu" Sobral and Rafael "Feijao" Cavalcante.
How big were those wins? Where does that put Henderson in the pecking order in the middleweight and light heavyweight rankings? Yahoo!'s lead MMA writer Kevin Iole joined us to talk about Henderson's future in Strikeforce and also addressed some fans talking about a possible fight against Fedor Emelianenko.

With lightweight roster crunch, Pearson and Fisher could be in jeopardy
Ross Pearson was the winner of Season 9 of "The Ultimate Fighter," but that doesn't mean he's got a job for life with the UFC or even the rest of 2011 for that matter.
The UFC has a short leash when it comes to TUF alums and it has no problem sending a guy to minors if his performances aren't up to snuff. That's pressure. It's even worse for lightweights because the promotion just added a slew of 155ers from the WEC.
The Telegraph's Gareth Davies says the UFC has 68 lightweights under contract and is looking to get the number down to 30. If that's the case, it essentially sets up a single elimination lightweight tourney for much of 2011. It might begin tomorrow with Pearson taking on UFC vet Spencer Fisher at UFC 127.
Watch UFC 127 right here on Yahoo! Sports.
Pearson lost his last fight against Cole Miller while Fisher is 1-2 since Oct. of 2009. Pearson is a good prospect and Fisher has been a great card filler with 15 fights for the UFC. Both should be safe, but you never know. That's why Pearson isn't willing to risk it with a lackluster effort.
"He’s a tough veteran, been around a while, there are no surprises with what he’ll bring, he’s at the age where he is in the final assault in his career - I’m not saying I’ll finish his career by that – coming to the final surge," Pearson said. "I want to make him miss, and make him pay,"
Fisher (24-6, 9-5 UFC) looked outstanding in a win over Aaron Riley. That was a dominant second round stoppage, he wants more this time against the 34-year-old Fisher.
"I like a guy who comes out to fight, applies pressure, it suits my style," Pearson told The Telegraph U.K. "He’s similar in a sense to Aaron Riley – they looked a mirror image of each other when they fought – and I have a similar game plan, but I’ll be using different angles against Spencer."
Pearson (11-4, 3-1 UFC) is not only coming back from his first loss in the UFC, it's his first fight back after knee surgery. Arthroscopic surgery repaired a torn ligament repaired and cleaned bone chips from his knee.
Fellow Brit Paul Kelly, another lightweight, was cut after a loss to Donald Cerrone at UFC 126. Kelly was a respectable 5-4 with the promotion. It's likely he could be brought back as a filler in one-fight spots, especially for upcoming European UFC cards, but for now he's looking to fight his way back onto the big shows.
Fisher and Pearson square off on ION. The 9 p.m. ET broadcast also includes the Alexander Gustafsson-James Te Huna and Riki Fukuda-Nick Ring fights. That follows the telecast of two more preliminary fights on UFC's Facebook page.

Gustafsson chokes out a tired Te Huna at UFC 127
James Te Huna was a little too wired fighting in front of the home crowd in Australia. The Sydney resident fought at a frantic pace in the opening minute, then faded quickly before becoming a first round rear-naked choke victim of Alexander Gustafsson at UFC 127.
Less than 30 seconds into the fight, Te Huna (12-5, 1-1 UFC) scored a takedown and was incredibly active on top. Gustafsson did a nice job of weathering the storm. Te Huna was throwing punches and elbows from side control and looked to have an easy pass for the mount, but never seized the opportunity.
Gustafsson settled Te Huna down by getting him, first in his half guard and then full guard. The Swede got back to his feet with three minutes left in the round. A minute later, Gustafsson scored a takedown against Te Huna, who was clearly winded. He scored another when he reversed a Te Huna takedown attempt and quickly took his back with 1:10 left. Te Huna didn't provide much opposition on the ground. Gustafsson flattened him out and applied a rear-naked choke. Te Huna survived and spun out, but Gustafsson stayed with it and got the New Zealander back to his stomach where he latched on the finishing submission. He got the tap at the 4:27 mark of the first.
At 6-foot-5, Gustafsson, 24, is an intriguing light heavyweight prospect. He's now 3-1 in the UFC with his only loss coming against super-prospect Phil Davis. He's also got wins over Jared Hamman and veteran striker Cyrille Diabate.

China's Zhang opens UFC 127 Facebook fights with a win
Tiequan Zhang is still a bit of a mysterious character, but there's no question about the fact that he's a pretty solid MMA competitor.
Zhang dropped to featherweight for his UFC debut and smoked Jason Reinhardt in less than a minute at UFC 127. Zhang locked on a guillotine choke (pictured below) and nearly put Reinhardt out at the 0:48 mark of the first round in Sydney, Australia.
Zhang (13-1, 1-0 UFC, 1-1 WEC) is the first fighter from China to compete in the UFC. He made his Zuffa debut in 2010.
He looked extremely comfortable in this one, as he stalked Reinhardt from the start. Zhang followed the shorter fighter around the cage looking to land something big. He closed space along the cage and when Reinhardt dropped his head a bit, Zhang went for the choke.
Reinhardt pushed forward and the fight fell to the ground where he was trapped in the nasty choke. He waited until the very last second to tap. When Zhang released the choke, Reinhardt didn't move, he was groggy and out of it.
Zhang, 32, nicknamed "The Mongolian Wolf," is a sanshou specialist. His trainer said he's also recently been elevated to a jiu-jitsu brown belt. China is an untapped MMA breeding ground internationally. With a strong martial arts background, China could be quite the source for talent over the next five years. The Chinese fight fan market is also untapped and a big reason why UFC put Zhang's fight on Facebook.

Perosh crushes Blackledge in UFC 205 debut
Anthony Perosh hasn't carved out much of a reputation in the UFC, simply because he's been a card filler at heavyweight. The Aussie was overmatched against the big guys. Today, down at more comfortable weight, he was able to show off his vaunted jiu-jitsu game and blew through Tom Blackledge.
Perosh (10-6, 1-3 UFC) missed on his first two takedowns, but when he scored a third with 3:13 left in the first, Blackledge was nearly helpless off his back. Perosh softened up Blackledge by raining down punches and then settled into the Brit's half guard. He quickly passed to the mount where Blackledge bailed and spun to his stomach. That was a bad move because Perosh locked on a rear-naked choke just seconds later forcing the tap.
Perosh suffered UFC losses in 2006 to Christian Wellisch and Jeff Monson. He took a beating against Mirko Filipovic last year at UFC 110.

UFC on Versus 3 weigh-ins: Another stop, another 'educate the city' newspaper story
MMA is almost there, we promise. The point of MMA, and in particular the UFC hitting different countries around the U.S. and world is to spread the word, grow the sport and most importantly dispel silly notions about the brutality and safety of the sport. UFC is hitting Kentucky for the first time, so not surprisingly, the Louisville Courier-Journal has the typical "intro to MMA story" in this morning's paper.
The story titled "UFC mixed martial arts a bit more mainstream now" is built around quotes like this from Mark Munoz and Martin Kampmann:
"Mixed martial arts is misconstrued as a brutal and barbaric sport," Munoz said. "People's first impression was formed when it first came out: It was no holds barred, and people still think of it like that."
"When you say you're fighting UFC, they still think it's like 1993. They think you go in there and fight a sumo wrestler until one of you is dead," said Kampmann.
The writer C. Ray Hall warns Kentuckians:
Some, no doubt, are interested in seeing how it goes. First-timers at tonight's fights may be surprised and mystified.
Barefoot men armed with fingerless 4-ounce gloves will climb into an eight-sided ring ("the Octagon" — a trademarked name). The ring is bordered by a chain-link cage/fence that's 5 feet, 9 inches tall. The combatants use fists, feet, elbows and knees.
When a fighter hits the deck, his opponent will not retreat to a neutral corner. The aggressor may straddle his opponent's chest, raining punches on the face of the prostrate unfortunate.
The face in question assumes a "give-me-a-minute-to-think-of-something-here" look until its owner thinks of something or gives up, consciously or unconsciously. Or the man on top will try to maneuver the poor unfortunate into a choke hold that carries a picturesque name such as "guillotine" or "reverse naked."
The guess is here is that amongst the 9,000 expected to attend the event at the Yum! Center, there won't be many "first-timers" as far as viewing the sport. Just a guess. But thank you C. Ray, we all appreciate the public service you've provided.

Bisping camp blames Rivera's 'Phinney' for explosion in the Octagon
While the MMA world waits for the UFC to come to a decision on Michael Bisping's behavior, the Brit's manager Anthony McGann wanted to tell their side of the story. According to McGann, the week of the fight, there were more shenanigans from Matt Phinney of Camp Rivera and his tomfoolery continued on the night of the fight.
“I would like to give our take on what happened in Australia. Let me begin first by saying that in five years of competing in the UFC at every level, we have never encountered a more unprofessional outfit as Jorge Rivera’s camp," McGann told MMAWeekly. "All the teams who rub shoulders regularly at all the events are always polite, respectful and courteous to each other. Regardless of any of the fighters smack talk or actions. all the camps will attest to this. Along comes this Phinney guy out of the blue, he is Rivera’s boxing coach and the guy who features heavily in the YouTube videos making fun of Mike Bisping."
It was one thing to goad Bisping and Co. on video, but according to McGann, the trash talk continued at the UFC hotel in Sydney.
"The real problems begin in the hotel in Australia. As always fighters are staying in close proximity in the hotel for over a week and during the day the camps pass each other. Normally the fighters will be tense with their opponent but the teams always remain neutral and polite. Rivera’s crew were mocking mike and laughing at him and Jorge even gave an interview to Fanhouse (4:45 mark) saying if Mike was a man he would confront him in the hotel."
McGann says much of the effort was driven by the goal of selling t-shirts.
"This situation was the reason for the emotional weigh-ins and throughout the catalyst was Phinney. In fact Rivera had two more coaches who never participated in any of this, they did act professional. It was always Rivera and Phinney. If you look at all the Ranger-Up YouTube stuff it seems Phinney is the driving force behind the company and it was him even up to the point on the scale who was constantly goading Mike. I believe he should have concentrated more on real fight preparation like we did than silly childish games and behavior."
McGann thinks Bisping's illegal knee was a mistake that happens sometimes in the course of the fight.
He says Phinney got Bisping's blood boiling further by chiding him as Rivera was trying to recover.
"This fight was not your normal fight, the hype was immense and I am sure the fans felt this. The illegal knee was what it was, Mike was over excited and timed it wrong. He is not known for illegal blows although this does happen in the sport from time to time. Whilst Rivera was recovering, Phinney was shouting obscenities to Mike if you look you can see Mike give him the finger in reply. He was also hurling abuse at our corner men, once again this behaviour is unheard of in the UFC. Anyway YouTube videos and goading Mike did him no good and Mike dispatched him with ease.”
At the end of the fight Bisping was still hearing it from Phinney.
"Mike was still emotional and asked Rivera for an apology, still Phinney was shouting abuse and Mike replied to him, Mike did spit but on the floor in his direction not on him. Phinney was hurling abuse at Mike and our corner men the whole time. His behaviour at the cage was disgusting and unbefitting of the UFC and I won’t go into any more detail as Phinney doesn’t deserve any notoriety. He does not reflect in anyway the normal conduct of us and the rest of the teams. If that’s how he has behaved at other events then he needs to go back to them. Although I believe that after this we won’t be hearing much of Mr. Phinney anymore."
The UFC has an interesting situation here. Bisping is a driving force behind the promotion's efforts to build its brand in the U.K. and internationally. So cutting him, seems unlikely.
In the video below, Yahoo! Sports' lead MMA writer Kevin Iole says firing Bisping is absolutely a possibility. He followed that up on Twitter by saying he think it's 50-50.
That said, the UFC has two or three ready-made fights sitting there for Bisping with middleweights Vitor Belfort, Chael Sonnen and Nate Marquardt all calling him out.

Ebersole's manscaping at UFC 127 could start a trend
Brian Ebersole's surprising win at UFC 127 came with unorthodox striking, a Fight of the Night bonuns and most importantly, epic manscaping. Ebersole's chest hair was shaped into an arrow pointing up, something he's done for the past few years to show his opponent where to hit. Could his excellent UFC debut inspire more MMA manscaping? We have a few suggestions.
Forrest Griffin: The UFC light heavyweight and original Ultimate Fighter has been pushing his book about surviving the apocalypse, so why not really commit to it and show it on his chest?
Dominick Cruz: The UFC bantamweight champ is known for being light on his feet and dancing around the cage, so he may as well let opponents know what they're getting into before the fight starts. A pair of ballet slippers should do the trick.
Georges St. Pierre: The French-Canadian wears the fleur-de-lis on many of his walkout shirts and usually shows up at his fights waxed (we are assuming) and tanned, but shaving a fleur-de-lis into his chest hair at UFC 130 would truly show devotion to Quebecois.
Clay Guida: The Carpenter is a huge fan of "The Big Lebowski," and is just crazy enough to try this. It would take a talented manscaper to do the job, but who wouldn't want to see the Dude represented on Guida's chest?
Thanks to Becky for help on this!
